Woody and GirlLibrary Ballot Question to Be Voted on November 7

Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, 676 approved signatures were collected to request a vote of county residents to create a new library district with a library tax of 12 cents per $100.00 assessed valuation.  These petitions were presented to the County Clerk who certified them.  The County Clerk presented the county library proposed initiative petition to the County Commissioners.  The Commissioners in turn voted to order the proposition be placed on a ballot for a vote of the people on November 7.

The proposed new district will include all of Moniteau County except the city of Tipton who recently passed a levy for their own municipal library.  It would replace the district dissolved in February by Judge Barnes who stated that the former library district was not created legally.  The proposed tax is the same as tax payers in the city of California and parts of the western county have been paying.  Upon passage of the ballot questions, ALL residents of Moniteau County would have access to free public library services for the first time.

The Wood Place Library is operated by The Elia Wood Foundation.  The board voted to provide FREE library cards to anyone residing in Moniteau County that wishes to use the library.  We encourage those who have never used the library to apply for a library card and begin exploring the collections for check-out, 14 public computers, free WiFi, e-Books, Copy/Faxing services,  and programs.  The Foundation is reaching out to residents to assist them in making an informed decision when considering a levy vote on November 7.

In the meantime, the Foundation has fundraised to assist with operating costs to Keep the Doors Open until pubic support is voted into existence and tax funds are received.  The goal is to be open part-time in 2017, and full time beginning January 2, 2018.

Once a levy has been passed, the library will be eligible for MO State Library programs and grants.  These grants provide funding for the Summer Reading Program, Interlibrary Loan Courier Service, the Rural Electronic Assess for Libraries (REAL) program, and other beneficial programs.

We are excited about the future of the library and appreciate your support and understanding during this time of uncertainity for the library.
